Apple reportedly in talks to launch its own mobile virtual network service in the U.S. and Europe

- Monday, August 3, 2015 No Comments
Apple’s iPhone has become so common, so ubiquitous, that even Apple has recent gone to marketing to show why if you’re not using an iPhone, you’re really not using an iPhone (and should be). There’s no doubt that the iPhone, along with other products from the company, have given Apple a huge lead in the technology industry, so much so that even when they launch a smartwatch, it’s a device that a lot of people want to buy and use. But, according to a new report from Business Insider, the company is looking to expand its reach within the mobile industry by going a bit further than smartphones and tablets with LTE-connectivity. The report suggests that the company is looking to launch its own mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO. That service would launch both in the United States and Europe at some point in the future. As a refresher, an MVNO is a service that works as a virtual carrier network, so that a company essentially leases the space necessary to use a network from already established carriers, like AT&T and Verizon Wireless, to sell that network access directly to the customer. In the United States, MVNOs include Boost Mobile, Cricket Wireless and others.

If this pans out, and if a user were to switch to Apple’s MVNO, it would mean that a customer would be paying Apple for practically everything that comes with their smartphone — including texts, calls and data access. Instead of paying one carrier, though, Apple’s MVNO and the inclusion of the Apple SIM would mean that the smartphone (or tablet) could switch between carriers when necessary to get the best coverage possible.

As far as a launch window is concerned, the report indicates that Apple is looking into the future for this, and that even if it gets everything lined up, it could be close to five years before Apple launches it to the public. The report also notes that Apple has been in talks with wireless carriers for years now, suggesting its an “open secret” that a virtual network from the Cupertino-based carrier is on the way at some point.

Interestingly enough, with reports surfacing earlier on August 3 that Apple is working on “iCloud Voicemail,” which would use iCloud and Siri to transcribe voicemails, it could be a sign that Apple is indeed working on shifting away from the carriers proper, and looking to launch something of its own down the road. It’s also worth noting that Google is also working on its own MVNO, Project Fi, which it launched in an early test phase not too long ago.

Would you ditch your carrier for Apple’s MVNO?

Saurik releases Cydia 1.1.19, now runs as mobile instead of root

- Thursday, July 2, 2015 No Comments

A pretty huge change just happened to Cydia. In the version just released, version 1.1.19, the installer now runs as mobile instead of root. This means that Cydia Substrate tweaks can now modify Cydia. This is really big news. It means that not only will existing tweak modifications remain working while Cydia is open, but it potentially means that a whole new class of tweaks become available for Cydia. Don’t like Cydia’s UI? There could be a tweak or a theme for that!

Here are the full change notes from Cydia regarding Cydia Installer 1.1.19:

What does this mean?
It means that developers can now make tweaks to modify the look and feel of Cydia directly. It also means that currently existing tweaks that modify the look and feel of iOS can now do the same for Cydia.

Cydia with Eclipse 2’s night mode

You know how Cydia goes back to the stock look when you open the app, even if you have system changing tweaks installed? Well that will no longer happen with this update.

How to get it?
Just refresh Cydia and install Cydia Installer 1.1.19.
This is pretty cool news for jailbreakers, don’t you think? What type of tweaks and themes would you like to see on Cydia?

How to fix safe mode crashes in iOS 8.4 when Activator is installed

You may have noticed that your device will respring into safe mode whenever the public version of Activator is installed on iOS 8.4. The problem is, many tweaks rely on Activator as a prerequisite, and Activator hasn’t been updated to work with iOS 8.4 as of yet.
Does that mean that any tweak that relies on Activator is simply unusable until Ryan Petrich pushes out a public update? Not at all. Just install the Activator beta…

As he always tends to do before posting updates publicly, Ryan posted an Activator update for iOS 8.4 to his beta repo. You’ll simply need to add his beta repo in order to download the iOS 8.4 compatible version of Activator—version 1.9.4 beta 1.

Ryan’s beta repo: http://rpetri.ch

Once the beta repo is added, search for Cydia, and you should see the iOS 8.4 compatible version being pulled from his repo.
Keep in mind that the Activator beta is just that, a beta, so although I’ve found it to be stable, it’s still in testing. Once you update, you’ll then be able to install any tweak that relies on Activator without being placed into safe mode.
This is one of those little things that’s easy to forget, and you can find yourself needlessly troubleshooting other jailbreak tweak installs. Before you mess around with installing any tweaks, add Ryan’s beta repo and install Activator. It’ll may end up saving you a lot of time in the long run.
Are you running the Activator beta on your jailbroken device? If so, what’s the experience been like thus far?

How to jailbreak iOS 8.4 with TaiG 2.2.0

- Tuesday, June 30, 2015 No Comments

TaiG 2.2.0 was just released about an hour ago, and it brings with it support for iOS 8.4. Like previous versions of TaiG’s tool, this version is Windows-only, so you’ll need to use a Windows machine or a virtual Machine.

We’ve created a full video walkthrough and tutorial to show you how to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 8.1.3-iOS 8.4 using TaiG 2.2.0. It’s an extremely easy jailbreak that only takes a few minutes if the directions are followed closely.
Note: this tool requires Windows or a virtual machine running windows. You must have iTunes installed (latest version is fine) for this to work.

Be sure to have Find My iPhone, passcode lock, and location services disabled prior to starting. Enter Airplane mode as well. It’s also best if you use a fresh iOS install, and you reboot before starting. Also, ensure that iTunes can recognize your device before running the TaiG too!

Step 1: Download TaiG 2.2.0 from our downloads page; save and extract it to your desktop
Step 2: Connect your iOS 8.4 device to your computer
Step 3: Launch TaiG 2.2.0
Step 4: Uncheck the 3K assistant checkbox
Step 5: Click Start to begin the jailbreak

Once the jailbreak completes, launch Cydia to start the Cydia initialization process. The great thing about TaiG 2.2.0 and iOS 8.4 is that the current version of Cydia Substrate works out of the box, so there are no weird workarounds or waits to endure until you can use your favorite tweaks. That said, some tweaks will need to be updated and enabled before you can enjoy them.

What do you think? Are you jailbroken on iOS 8.4 yet?

PP releases working iOS 8.4 jailbreak

PP, the same team who released a previous iOS 8 jailbreak for Mac, and who was accused of taking code from TaiG, has purportedly released an iOS 8.4 jailbreak. We have been able to confirm that this jailbreak works on iOS 8.4. That said, TaIG claims that PP stole its code, but we are not able to confirm this as of yet.
Keep in mind that you may want to hold off until we hear word from community leaders like saurik. Also, Cydia Substrate and other packages may need to be updated before this is truly useful, but it looks like it’s functioning fairly well thus far.

TaiG releases an iOS 8.4 jailbreak

As expected, TaiG has released an update to its jailbreak tool for iOS 8.4. Just a while ago, PP released a jailbreak tool, which TaiG claims uses its code. For those of you who didn’t want to bother with the PP tool for this reason, you’ll be glad to know that TaiG’s updated 2.2.0 jailbreak is now available for iOS 8.4 users.
Here is the change log for TaiG 2.2.0, which isn’t much outside of the acknowledged iOS 8.4 support.
  • TaiG released the original jailbreak tool V2.2.0. It supports all iDevices running iOS 8.1.3-8.4.

  • Launch Cydia.
  • Go to Manage Account.
  • Login with either Google or Facebook.
  • Your Cydia ID will be displayed below the Installable Purchases option labelled as ‘Cydia Account

The Changes tab in Cydia shows all the newly released packages along with the installed ones which have an update pending. However, you can also track updates for packages that haven’t been installed on your device. Cydia updated to v1.1.17 to support iOS 8.3; fix ‘cannot identify your device’ issue [Updated to v1.1.18]

Saurik has just released an update for the Cydia Installer (v1.1.17) to make it compatible with iOS 8.3. The update will fix the issue where Cydia would report that it “cannot identify your device” when you try to access your Cydia account.
The issue was reported by several users after jailbreaking their iOS device on iOS 8.3 using TaiG’s jailbreak tool.
Here’s the complete change log:
Update Cydia to Support iOS 8.3
On iOS 8.3, Cydia would report that it “cannot identify your device” while trying to access your account. This was due to changes on iOS 8.3, and has been fixed.
Support file:/// Repository URLs
Recent versions of Cydia have rejected “local” repository URLs. This was due to an overly-limited filter on acceptable URLs. You can now again use local repositories.
If you’ve jailbroken your device using the TaiG iOS 8.3 Jailbreak then you should get an Essential Upgrade popup. Tap on the Complete Upgrade to install Cydia 1.1.17 update.
Please note that this still doesn’t fix the Cydia Substrate issue. As reported earlier, TaiG will need to update the jailbreak kernel patch to fix the issue with Cydia Substrate.
The TaiG team had said that they would release the jailbreak today.
Update:
Saurik has released Cydia 1.1.18 to fix a bug that could cause SpringBoard to lock up if it was killed by a user via the app switcher. The bug was introduced in v1.1.17, which was released earlier today.
Here’s the complete change log for Cydia 1.1.18 update:
Killing Cydia Locked up SpringBoard
A “proactive” fix for iOS 8.3 added in Cydia 1.1.17 caused SpringBoard to lock up if users killed Cydia using the iOS task switcher. This fix is designed to fix an issue that should be present on iOS 8.3, but TaiG’s jailbreak seems to provide a workaround in the form of a kernel patch. This will be investigated for later releases, but in the mean time the fix has been removed.

TaiG iOS 8.1.3-8.3 Untethered Jailbreak Tutorial

- Tuesday, June 23, 2015 No Comments

Chinese team TaiG has released an iOS 8.3 untethered jailbreak tool on Windows for compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. TaiG warns that some jailbreak add-ons are not compatible with iOS 8.3 as Jay Freeman (saurik) has yet to update Cydia Substrate (Mobile Substrate) to be compatible with the latest jailbreak. The team did not release an iOS 8.3 jailbreak tool for OS X.
iOS 8.3 Jailbreak TaiG

Jailbreaking enables iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users to install unapproved third-party apps, tweaks, mods, custom themes, utilities, and other content (called "packages") from Cydia, which is essentially an App Store alternative for jailbroken devices. Jailbreaking allows users to further customize and enhance their iOS devices beyond the limits that Apple imposes.

It is highly recommended that you back up your data through iTunes or iCloud before attempting to jailbreak your device, as there are various issues that could require downgrading or restoring your device and result in data loss. TaiG offers more information on its Twitter and has posted step-by-step instructions on how to use the iOS 8.3 untethered jailbreak on its website.

Apple Watch hacked to run UIKit based native app

- Monday, June 15, 2015 No Comments

Well-known Cydia developers, Steve Troughton-Smith, Adam Bell and Cydia Founder, Jay Freeman aka saurik have successfully hacked the Apple Watch on watchOS 2 to run UIKit & SceneKit apps on the device. At its WWDC 2015 Keynote, Apple announced watchOS 2 for Apple Watch, which will allow third-party apps to run natively on the device for better performance. However, even though the logic code for the Watch apps runs on the Apple Watch and they’ve access to the Digital Crown, microphone, Taptic engine, and health sensors, they’re restricted as developers have to use WatchKit to define interfaces. They can’t use superior frameworks like UIKit and SceneKit in the Watch apps like iPhone apps.

As you can see in the video below they managed to get an interactive 3D object running on the Apple Watch powered by Apple’s SceneKit framework. Steve explains that he picked SceneKit as “it is an example of something you can’t do through the WatchKit”.

This is not the first time Apple Watch has been hacked. Comex, well-known hacker had
hacked the device to run a web browser.

Update:
I’ve updated the title and the article after getting more clarity on the limitation of watchOS 2.

Apple announces Wallet, adds rewards cards to Apple Pay

At this year’s WWDC, Apple announced a few key changes to the way that Apple Pay works, and even rebranded Passbook.

Leading up to this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple unveiled that it has rebranded Passbook, as a good indicator that the service has expanded quite a bit. And that includes the ability to not simply just carry credit or debit cards, but also the introduction of rewards cards from several different retailers.

he first retailers offering rewards cards out of the gate will be Kohls, BJ’s, and JCPenney. More retailers will be added in short order, including Dunkin’ Donuts adding its own rewards program as well.
Apple also announced that Apple Pay will be coming to the United Kingdom this July.

Apple will let marketers push ‘Offers’ to Wallet users with iAd

One of the new additions to iOS 9 that Apple showed off on stage during the WWDC 2015 keynote was Wallet, a rebranded and refocused Passbook app.

With Wallet, Apple aims to rebrand the Passbook app to better reflect its purpose: To hold a ton of digital cards, including the credit/debit cards associated with Apple Pay, and even the newly-supported rewards cards that will be offered by a variety of retailers. Now, according to a report, those rewards cards will come with something else: Offers.
As surfaced by 9to5Mac, Apple will let marketers reach out to loyal customers through focused iAds released via the Wallet app, and prompted either by location, or through previous purchases, geography, age, gender and other factors determined via the retailer’s own data:“Offers allow marketers to put customized, dynamic messages directly into the Wallet that’s built into every iPhone – and accessible via Apple Watch.“
These marketing pushes can be triggered by iBeacons as well, so simply walking into a store where a rewards/loyalty card is stored within Wallet could prompt an iAd offer. The report also indicates that while Apple’s blog post to advertisers isn’t quite direct, sources familiar with the matter point out that users will have to “manually add an iAd ‘Offer’ to Wallet.
Wallet is scheduled to launch along with iOS 9 later this year.
